The 6 Quality Score fixes that cut our clients' Google Ads CPC by 34% in 2026
Every Google Ads account we take over has the same problem: Quality Scores in the 4–6 range that could be 8–10 with two weeks of focused cleanup. The difference isn't cosmetic. A jump from QS 5 to QS 9 typically cuts cost-per-click by 30–50% and lifts conversion volume without spending an extra dollar. Here's the exact fix list we run.
1. Tighten ad group themes to one intent, one landing page. The single biggest QS killer is stuffing 40 loosely related keywords into one ad group. Split every ad group so it contains 5–15 keywords that share the exact same search intent, and point each ad group at a landing page that mirrors that intent word-for-word. Ad relevance jumps from Average to Above Average almost overnight.
2. Rewrite headlines around the actual search query. Google awards higher QS to ads that literally contain the searched keyword in Headline 1. Use dynamic keyword insertion sparingly — instead, write 3–5 pinned headline variants per ad group where the target keyword is the first three words. This is boring, mechanical work. It's also the fastest QS win in the entire platform.
3. Fix landing page load speed. Landing page experience is one of the three QS components, and Google now weights Core Web Vitals heavily. A landing page that takes 4+ seconds to load will cap your QS at 6 no matter what else you fix. Our Core Web Vitals playbook is the exact process we use on client landing pages before we ever touch the ad copy.
4. Add negatives aggressively — weekly. Every account we audit has 30–60% of spend flowing to search terms that will never convert. Pull the search terms report every Monday, negative-match everything irrelevant, and watch CTR climb. Higher CTR feeds higher expected CTR, which feeds higher QS. This is a compounding lever.
5. Match landing page copy to ad copy. If the ad headline promises 'Custom ecommerce websites from $4,000' and the landing page opens with 'We help brands grow', Google (and the visitor) sees a mismatch. Every landing page should echo the ad headline within the first fold, then deliver on it below. Landing page experience score rises immediately.
6. Prune underperforming keywords ruthlessly. Any keyword with QS 3 or lower is dragging down the account-wide quality signal. Pause them, don't 'try to fix' them. Reallocate the budget to your QS 8+ keywords and the account math improves in every direction.
What this looks like in practice
The last three accounts we onboarded went from blended QS 5.2 → 8.6 in 21 days. Average CPC dropped 34%, conversion volume rose 41%, and total spend stayed flat. Nothing above is exotic — it's just discipline nobody has time for internally.
Every PPC management plan we run includes weekly Quality Score audits, landing page speed fixes, and negative keyword hygiene as standard. Run the calculator to scope a plan, or book a free ad account review and we'll send back a QS heatmap of your top 20 spending keywords.
