How to rank inside Google's AI Overviews (the 2026 SEO shift no one is talking about)
If your organic traffic has slid 10–30% since April 2026, you're not imagining it. Google's AI Overviews now render on the majority of commercial queries, pushing traditional blue links below the fold. The upside: pages that get cited inside the AI Overview capture more attention than the old #1 organic slot. The downside: getting cited requires a completely different content structure than the SEO playbook everyone learned in 2020.
1. Write for extractability, not word count. AI Overviews pull direct sentences and short paragraphs from source pages. A 3,000-word essay with buried answers won't get cited — a 900-word page with a clear H2 question and a 2-sentence answer directly below it will. Restructure every commercial page so the primary question is answered in the first 40 words after the H2, in complete sentences, without pronouns that reference earlier context.
2. Use question-shaped H2s. Google's model heavily favors pages where the H2 mirrors the query language. If the query is 'how much does an ecommerce website cost', the H2 should read exactly that — not 'Pricing overview' or 'Investment ranges'. This one change alone lifted citation rate 4x across the client sites we tested it on in Q2.
3. Add structured comparisons and numbered lists. AI Overviews disproportionately cite pages with tables, ranked lists, and clear numeric ranges. If your service page describes pricing as 'affordable' instead of '$4,000–$18,000', it's invisible to the model. Every claim you want cited must have a number, a comparison, or a specific attribute attached.
4. Reinforce entity authority with schema. Organization, Product, Service, FAQPage, and HowTo schema aren't optional anymore — they're the primary signal Google uses to decide which sources are trustworthy enough to cite. We now ship JSON-LD on every commercial page as part of the base build.
5. Build the internal link path to your extractable pages. Once you've restructured a page for AI Overview extraction, funnel authority into it using the internal linking playbook. A page that ranks position 3–7 organically is 8x more likely to be cited than a page that ranks position 20, so traditional SEO still matters — it's now the ticket to the citation lottery.
What to do this week
Pick your five highest-intent commercial pages. Audit each one against the extractability checklist above, then rewrite the first 40 words under each H2 to answer the question directly. Add FAQPage schema. Track citations in Google Search Console's new 'AI features' report over the next 30 days.
Every SEO management plan we run now includes AI Overview optimization, schema deployment, and citation tracking as standard. If you'd rather map the opportunity yourself first, run the pricing calculator or book a free audit — we'll flag which of your pages are one rewrite away from being cited.
