Why your homepage isn't converting: the message hierarchy audit that fixes it in a week
Founders love to rewrite the homepage. It's the highest-visibility change they can ship without asking anyone, and it feels productive. It's also almost always the wrong intervention — because the problem is rarely the words, it's the hierarchy the words sit inside. Here's the five-level audit we run before touching copy.
Level 1 — Who is this for? A visitor should know within 3 seconds whether they're the intended audience. If your homepage tries to speak to 'businesses of all sizes', it speaks to no one. Pick the primary segment, name them explicitly, and let secondary segments find themselves via sub-pages.
Level 2 — What outcome do you deliver? Not what you do, what changes in the customer's world because of what you do. 'We build websites' is what. 'You launch in 6 weeks with a site that converts 3x your current one' is outcome. Only outcome moves conversion.
Level 3 — Why should they believe you? Every outcome claim needs a proof element within one screen scroll: case study numbers, client logos, before/after screenshots, testimonials with faces, or public performance data. Unsupported claims read as marketing noise and get skipped.
Level 4 — What makes you the obvious choice vs. alternatives? Visitors are comparing you against 3–7 competitors before they'll book a call. Name the differentiator explicitly — process, team, guarantee, integration, price transparency — and put it in the top third of the page.
Level 5 — What is the next step and why now? Every homepage needs one primary CTA that matches the visitor's actual readiness (pricing calculator for evaluators, book-a-call for buyers, download-the-guide for researchers) and a reason to act this week instead of bookmarking for later.
The audit in practice
Open your homepage. For each of the five levels, write down what a first-time visitor would answer after 10 seconds. If any level is unclear, fix that level before rewriting anything else. Nine times out of ten, the fix is structural (reorder sections, swap the hero proof element, replace the CTA), not linguistic.
Message hierarchy audits are part of every CRO retainer we run, and part of the discovery process on every new website build. Get in touch with your homepage URL and we'll run the five-level audit and send back a marked-up screenshot within 5 business days — or scope a full CRO engagement in the calculator.
